Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Agent arrested a Buras man for alleged crabbing violations in Plaquemines Parish on March 12.
Agents arrested Doan V. Nguyen, 54, for theft of crab traps, destruction of crab traps or removal of contents, and illegal possession of stolen things. Nguyen was booked into the Belle Chasse Lockup in Plaquemines Parish.
LDWF agents received information that Nguyen stole numerous crab traps and kept them at his residence in Buras. Agents obtained a search warrant for the property and during the search they located numerous crab traps that belonged to the initial complainant.
Agents also discovered traps belonging to 18 other fishermen in Nguyen’s possession. Agents were able to confirm with many of the fishermen that the traps were stolen. LDWF agents seized 60 traps from Nguyen.
Theft of crab traps and destruction of crab traps each brings a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Theft of crab traps also brings a crab trap gear license suspension for one year from the date of conviction. Illegal possession of stolen things brings up to a $3,000 fine and five years in prison.
Agents involved in the case are Corporal Thomas Forehand, Lt. Adam Young, Senior Agent Kyle Haydel, Sgt. Thomas Wolf, Corporal Blaine Wagner, and Sgt. Villere Reggio.
