BATON ROUGE — East St. John juniors Bryce Watkins and Jai Gaines broke personal records while competing at the 2021 LHSAA Indoor Track and Field State Meet. State was held Feb. 21 at the Louisiana State University Carl Maddox Fieldhouse in Baton Rouge.
Watkins took fifth place in the pole vault competition with a personal best of 12 feet, 9 inches. Meanwhile, Jai Gaines had a personal best and claimed seventh place in the shot put competition with a 31-feet, 2-inch throw.
East St. John’s Aja Creecy also qualified for the Indoor Track and Field State Meet but was unable to attend, according to Coach Teddy Henry.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, no spectators were allowed to attend the State Meet. East St. John began its indoor season in December and saw a lot of growth through the months of January and February.
“We’re really strong on the field for our girls, and our boys are coming along,” Henry said. “I think everyone did a great job, and that’s why we had a successful indoor season. I’m really looking forward to the outdoor season.”
The first meet of the outdoor season will take place March 6 and will allow for additional events such as the javelin, discus and 4x100m relay.
The LHSAA Outdoor Track and Field State Meet will take place May 6-8 at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
