Eighth graders take virtual field trip
ST. ROSE — To start of the new year, Ms. Kathryn Wilken’s and Ms.Aunja Fenroy’s eighth grade ELA classes at Albert Cammon Middle School engaged in a virtual field trip with Destrehan Plantation to gain context before beginning the Guidebook Unit, Sugar Changed the World.
Students learned about the history of the plantation by watching the video, “The Story of Destrehan Plantation.” Next, they digitally analyzed several primary and secondary sources to provoke a discussion about plantation life before and after the Civil War. Then, they engaged in a gallery walk activity, gaining knowledge about the importance of sugar in Louisiana. Lastly, they participated in an online interview with Ms. Rachel Allemand, the heritage education coordinator at Destrehan Plantation.
