LAPLACE — Perry’s Posse is known for hosting the biggest garage sales in the River Parishes, some raising more than $40,000 to provide financial, emotional and spiritual support to active cancer patients.

COVID-19 has brought fundraising to a halt, and the organization no longer has access to the site previously used to host garage sales. This month marks seven years since Perry’s Posse was founded, and with the organization receiving 10 to 15 new cancer patients per month, public relations rep Joan LeBouef said it is just as important as ever to support the valiant fighters.

“Since COVID has practically stopped us from our fundraising efforts and as a cancer warrior taking oral chemotherapy for the rest of my life, I’d like to challenge all of our families, friends and supporters of Perry’s Posse to take part in the Posse Dollar Challenge,” LeBouef said.

“If Perry’s Posse has touched your life in some way by helping a family member or friend of yours, I challenge you to donate one dollar to our Posse Dollar Challenge. If you choose to donate a few extra dollars, I know our cancer patients will appreciate it as they travel to and from their treatments. No donation is too small.”

A donation link is available online at perrysposse.org. Donations can also be directed to Venmo @tanya-roccaforte1. Checks can be made payable to:

Perry’s Posse was formed when Lawrence “Perry” Levet Jr. passed away in 2014 after a year-long battle with leukemia. Prior to his passing, he asked his grandmother, Tanya Roccaforte, to assist other cancer patients in need. Perry’s Posse sends each of their cancer patients gas money, holidays cards, gifts and spiritual books to help ease their burden in their time of need.

LeBouef said the Dollar Challenge can help the Perry’s Posse organizers see just how many people Perry’s Posse has impacted since 2014.

Another way to support Perry’s Posse and other area nonprofits is to shop online using AmazonSmile. Shopping at smile.amazon.com allows access to the same products at the same prices. The only difference is, by using the Smile address, Amazon donates 0.5 percent of the price of eligible purchases. This presents no extra cost to the consumer.

According to LeBouef, Perry’s Posse is still looking for a location to hold garage sales in the future. Anyone who has vacant space for rent at a reasonable price is asked to contact LeBouef at 504-452-6547.
