Black History will be celebrated throughout the month of February at St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries. Trina Smith, our Children’s/Outreach Librarian, will be reading books from the Coretta Scott King Book Award List for children of all ages. The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. Join us on our social media platforms to learn more about these authors, books and illustrators. The Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) will host a celebration weekly to honor the achievements of African Americans and recognize how they played a central role in U.S. history. For more information, please call JoAnn Proctor at 985-497-3453.

The month of February also brings the Mardi Gras spirit to the libraries. The Norris J. Millet, Sr. Library (Central) will be hosting a “Mardi Gras Make Shoppe” for adult patrons. A take and make kit will be available for pick-up from Feb. 3 to Feb. 5 with supplies to make a Mardi Gras Wooden Door Hanger. For more information, please call Rona Joseph at 985-652-6857, ext. 1502 or email rjoseph@stjohn.lib.la.us. Children, ages 3 and up, are invited to make “Mardi Gras Crowns and Masks” in the comfort of their homes. Grab and go bags will be available for pick-up from Feb. 1 to Feb. 12 in the Central Library’s Children’s Book Bayou. The Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) will have grab and go bags available to make “Mardi Gras Masks” from Feb. 1 to Feb. 6. Tweens and teens are encouraged to participate in this program. The Central Library will also be hosting a special “Mardi Gras Story Time” for children ages 1 and up on Thursday, Feb. 11. Children, along with their parents are encouraged to watch on our social media platforms.
