LAPLACE — Thirty minutes is all it takes to save a life. Blood donors are capable of saving the lives of accident victims, adults and children with cancer, and newborn babies who need blood transfusions just hours after coming into this world.

The Blood Center asks community members to consider those who need help. One donation is enough to save up to three lives, and there is currently an urgent need for all blood types.

Healthy individuals 17 years of age or older, weighing at least 110 pounds (or 16-year-olds with signed parental consent, weighing at least 130 pounds) are eligible to donate.

Local blood drives may offer donors a choice of a T-shirt, Family Blood Coverage or a Heart Club.

When donating blood between Nov. 12-27, participants can also enter to win a PS5 and accessories in the Blood Centers of America’s “Lifesaving Has No Limits” raffle.

Additionally, all blood donations are being tested for COVID-19 antibodies free of charge.

Please see information about three upcoming blood drives in the area:

  • Wal-Mart LaPlace – 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16
  • Knights of Columbus Council 5935 (346 Fir Street in LaPlace) – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Donors can also be entered into a $100 Rouse’s gift card raffle.
  • Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell will host dueling blood drives from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18. Donors will get a FREE fried catfish dinner and a T-shirt from The Blood Center, while supplies last. “Our Slidell Blood Drive back in July was such a big success that we decided to do it again but this time at both restaurants,” said Middendorf’s Owner Karen Pfeifer. “We love helping our community, and it’s a good time to donate before the busy holiday season.”
