LAPLACE — Former St. John the Baptist Parish firefighter Michael Eric Moscona pleaded guilty in federal court for trying to smuggle approximately 130 pounds of marijuana, worth over $100,000, from Mexico. Officials determined, based on the large quantity, it was intended for distribution, which was later confirmed by Moscona.
Moscona was arrested at a border check-point in Texas on June 17 when a drug-sniffing dog called attention to Moscona’s vehicle. Border Agents found the cannabis.
He confessed shortly after and admitted to trying to transport the drugs to Ponchatoula. He also admitted to making several other trips to transport marijuana in previous months.
Moscona was placed on leave from the St. John Parish Fire Department after this incident.
Sentencing is tentatively set for December 7.
