COVID-19 cases rise in the River Parishes

LAPLACE — Confirmed cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in St. John the Baptist Parish was 38 as of noon Thursday, signaling an increase of 11 local cases in 24 hours. There have been two St. John Parish fatalities thus far. Both were older residents over the age of 60, and both received medical treatment outside of the parish.
The Louisiana Department of Health is reporting a total of 2,305 cases across the state. On Wednesday, that number was 1,795. Confirmed cases are expected to continue on an upward trend as more testing is completed.
As of Thursday, there have been 83 deaths across Louisiana. Including the two from St. John Parish, there have been five deaths in the River Parishes.
St. Charles Parish announced its first death on Wednesday and its second death on Thursday. There are currently 22 cases across the parish.
St. James Parish saw its first death and first reported case late last week. The death toll in St. James has held steady at one, while the number of reported cases has risen to 29.
At this time, 53 of the 64 parishes across Louisiana have reported cases of COVID-19. Orleans Parish has been hard-hit with 997 confirmed cases and 46 deaths as of Thursday.
