Keller: There’s more to life than football

Over the past few weeks, I’ve asked a few people what the fleur-de-lis stands for and everyone immediately said, “The Saints!” I then asked them how the dictionary describes it. It’s amazing that no one knew the answer.

I told them that the dictionary describes it as an emblem resembling a lily or iris (flowers); the coat of arms of the former French royal family.

I told them that I assumed everyone identifies the Cross as a Christian symbol of the crucifixion of Jesus.

As we are celebrating the Christmas Season, I believe the majority of the people in our area respect and worship the fleur-de-lis more than the Cross.

Does this concern me? Yes, it does, but I forget that God gives us a free choice. If the Saints winning is more important than the reason for the season, I thank God that the blinders have been taken off of my eyes. My peace doesn’t depend on who wins a football game.

I believe and pray for those who are in bondage to entertainment and athletics. May they realize that Jesus came to set us free from anything that would hinder what God has planned for our lives.
