LAPLACE — Deputy Jose Portillo was among 42 graduates of the Peace Officer Standards and Training program (POST) Class 111 conducted by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Training Academy in Thibodaux. The 22-week evening program included training in firearms, physical fitness, Louisiana criminal and traffic law, writing reports, conducting interrogations and general investigative techniques.

Deputy Portillo was recognized as a certified Peace Officer Oct. 29 during POST graduation at the Moses Community Center in Thibodaux. Portillo, who was chosen the class speaker for graduation, said he has no doubt Class 111 will be able to answer the call to protect and serve.

Portillo’s wife, Karina, pins his badge to his uniform.

“Cadets…have been taught what the expectations are…as police officers,” Portillo said. “These are such things as respect for others, compassion, honesty, courage, attention to duty and adherence to law, policies and procedures. I am confident that we have learned these things well.”

Sheriff Mike Tregre, who was the guest speaker at the graduation, congratulated the cadets on their successful completion of this rigorous and intense training.
