ST. ROSE — The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Raymond Lewis James Jr., 23, of Hahnville, for his involvement in the shooting that occurred in the 200 block of E. Club Drive, St. Rose on Oct. 9. James was taken into custody on Monday.

Police learned James and his girlfriend went to a residence in St. Rose to take custody of a 1-year-old child that was staying with the child’s father. The child’s mother (James’ girlfriend) and James knocked on the front door, and an altercation between James and the child’s father ensued.

James allegedly threatened the child’s father with a firearm that James had removed from his waistband. The firearm fell to the ground as the child’s father and James began physically fighting. During the altercation, the child’s father retrieved the firearm and shot James, striking him in the upper abdomen.

Initially, the child’s father left the scene and James was located by responding deputies. James was taken to University Medical Center where he stayed for several days while receiving treatment for his wounds.

Witness statements and evidence collected indicated that James brought the firearm with him to the St. Rose residence while attempting to retrieve the 1-year-old child. Further statements and evidence indicated that James was the aggressor in the situation, and utilized the firearm to threaten the child’s father.

James is charged with one count of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm.
