LAPLACE — St. John Parish Fire Department observed Fire Prevention Week by visiting local schools. The theme this year was “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape..” Its purpose was to stress the importance of practicing and planning a fire escape. In a typical home fire there may be a little as one or two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape practice and planning can help make the most of time available.

Students were taught what to do in the event of a fire, including, if needed, stop, drop and roll. The students were also treated to tours of the fire truck, trying on fire gear and a special visit from Sparky the Fire Dog.
