Southern Lab pulls away late in win over Riverside 47 – 28

BATON ROUGE – Riverside Academy traveled to Mumford Stadium on the Southern University Campus in Baton Rouge for a rare Thursday night game against the Southern Lab Kittens. Southern Lab took the 47 – 28 win, but the game was an afterthought for most fans and players who were concerned for an injured teammate that was air-lifted from the field early in the fourth quarter. Kayon “Slim” Brumfield, a sophomore defensive back for Riverside, was injured during a tackle. The game was delayed 45 minutes as Brumfield was airlifted to a local hospital.

Brumfield was admitted to the neuro critical care unit in stable condition, according to school officials. Thankfully, his MRI results came back clear, and he was moved to a regular room Friday. According to a posting on the Riverside Academy Football Moms Facebook page, Brumfield was awake and snapchatting teammates Friday afternoon.

For many, relief overshadowed any feelings disappointment surrounding Thursday night’s loss.

Southern Lab scored first on a touchdown by Wadee Hodges for a 7-0 lead. Riverside answered quickly with a 65-yard touchdown run by Chamar Jackson and a 6-yard touchdown run by Gage Larvadain to take the lead 14-7.

The Kittens fought back with two scored as Angelo Izzard hauled in a 79-yard touchdown pass, and Daelon Hardy caught another touchdown to put the Kittens on top 19-14. Riverside battled back to regain the lead 20-19 on a touchdown reception by Ahmonte Watkins. Southern Lab quickly scored again with a 45-yard touchdown pass and added a two-point conversion for the 27-20 halftime lead.

The Kittens scored first in the third quarter to extend the lead 34-20. Riverside narrowed the lead 34-28 with a 6-yard touchdown run by Luke Hymel and a successful 2-point conversion by Nick Washington.

Southern Lab’s running back scored on a 15-yard touchdown run and a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring 47-28.

Riverside Academy will be on the road next week to face Newman.
