AKRON, Ohio —University of Akron track and field head coach Dennis Mitchell announced the hiring of Justin Ortego as the Zips’ director of track and field operations.

Ortego is a graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School in LaPlace and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he recently obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in entrepreneurship.

While at LSU, Ortego served as a team manager of the university’s top-25 track and field program under the director of coach Dennis Shaver. His responsibilities included set-up and meet operation, day-to-day coordination of equipment and maintenance, and team travel preparation.

In an interview with the University of Akron athletic department, shared at gozips.com, Ortego said he was excited for the new position.
“It is an honor to be able to continue my career in athletics at the University of Akron under great coaches like Coach Mitchell and the rest of the staff,” Ortego said. “Being able to learn how another successful program navigates throughout the year will allow me to see NCAA track and field from a new perspective. I’m looking forward to doing everything I can to keep this program moving in the right direction.”
