Sacred Heart celebrates milestone

NORCO — Established in June 1959, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Norco is celebrating 60 years of service.

The parish was established with the first Mass, celebrated on June 27 by Father Marcel Fourcade. Fourcade initially refused the position when Archbishop Rummel offered it to him. It was not until it was offered a second time that the reverend accepted the position, since he could not refuse twice.

The Knights of Columbus from adjoining parishes were on hand for the celebration.

The assistant in 1959 was Father Stanislaus Manikowski, who had transferred from St. Charles Borromeo in Destrehan. The current Pastor is Rev. Edmund Akordor, celebrating 39 years as a priest this month.

Sacred Heart Church recently held a celebration mass attended by Akordor, Archbishop Gregory Aymond and the Norco community. The day included a potluck, hosted by the Altar Society in the Sacred Heart School cafeteria.

The religious celebrants prepare for the 60th anniversary mass.

There will be an Anniversary Extravaganza from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 20 at Cypress Lakes Country Club, located at 10 Villere Drive in Destrehan. There will be food, beverages and entry into the cash drawing. Tickets are $50 per person.
