Join effort to sew quilts for Perry’s Posse cancer patients

Penny Laiche, a Perry’s Posse member and an avid sewer and quilter, gathered some of her quilting friends to team up with Perry’s Posse to sew “Prayer Quilts” for active cancer patients in treatment.

Laiche is spearheading this project after speaking with Father Ray Hymel of St. Hubert Church in Garyville. Hymel graciously offered the group use of the church hall once a month, where Posse members along with community members from surrounding parishes gather to cut, press, sew and quilt fabric to make lap quilts for cancer patients.

Penny Laiche is leading an effort to sew quilts for local cancer patients so they can feel the love of a concerned community.

Upon completion, Hymel will bless the quilts and each time local cancer patients use them, they can take comfort in knowing parishioners of St. Hubert Church are praying for them on their cancer journey.

The Posse thanks Laiche for starting the group and her “quilting angels,” which include Mora Matherne, Gayle Lawrence, Beverly Flynn, Linda Shefler and Kathy Luther.

The Posse also thanks Denise Taylor of Mes Amis Quilt Shop in New Orleans for her generous donation of beautiful fabric.

Those interested are invited to come out and bring their machines if they have one and join the next session May 29 from 9 a.m. until the fun ends.

“If you cannot sew, there is lots to keep you busy like cutting and pressing,” Perry’s Posse member Joan F. LeBouef said. “We ask that the sewers and quilt makers bring their own machines that they are familiar with. Please bring any drinks or snacks that you may need.”
