LAPLACE — As individuals age and retire from working, they lose their social work network as spouses and friends pass away. Older individuals can become isolated and depressed.

The Golden Opportunity program at Ochsner Health System offers its members the chance to build new friendships and relations and offers a variety of educational and social events to the members.

Golden Opportunity “GO” can help the aging population make healthy lifestyle choices, whether it is attending relevant health seminars, learning about risk factors for diseases, guidance in understanding your medications, tips for heart-healthy eating or becoming physically active.

“GO” is a membership program for men and women (age 50+) offered by Ochsner that promotes an active, healthy and independent lifestyle.

We offer a broad array of wellness services, educational information, social activities and travel opportunities to keep members on track for optimum health.

Monthly events can include educational, social, cultural, travel (day and overnight trips) and other fun activities.

Some of our recent events included traveling out of state to exciting places, attending Broadway shows at the Saenger Theatre, touring the WWII Museum in New Orleans, dining at local restaurants and meeting interesting people in and around our community.

Initial annual membership dues are $25/single or $40/couple, with a renewal fee of only $15!

The focus is staying healthy and active while making new friends and creating new memories within a positive and safe environment.

GO wants to be a part of the best years of an aging individual’s life and wants to be a partner in good health.

In an effort to engage our older population and encourage healthy lifestyles, a fitness program is available for members which takes place at the Ochsner Health Center, located at 502 Rue de Sante’ in LaPlace.

Chermaine Hebert, program coordinator for the South Shore Region, handles LaPlace area residents. Her office number is 504-842-7000.
