Keller: Personal relationship key to faith

I grew up in a religion that concentrated more on church doctrine than Christianity.

When the blinders were removed from my eyes and heart at age 45, I had a spiritual experience referred to in John 3:3.

I was born-again and asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life. After that experience, I was excited and, I’m sure, turned off plenty of family members and friends, wanting them to know Jesus as I did.

What really got my attention about the spiritual pride I had, which turned off many people, was a prisoner in the St. Charles Parish jail.

As I was conducting a session there, I asked how many of them were Christians?

Only a few raised their hands.

I asked one man, “What makes you a Christian?”

“Jesus is the Lord of my life,” he answered.

“Are you born-again?”

“Yes! That’s the only way to be a Christian.”

”Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?”

He was a little aggravated and said he did.

“How do you explain a personal relationship with Jesus?”

“That’s easy! It’s personal. It’s none of your business.”

That was many years ago and I hope I never forget that encounter with a prisoner in the St. Charles Parish jail.
