LAPLACE — Louisiana State Police believe “excessive speed” factored into a fatality crash Saturday afternoon in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Anthony Silvestri Jr., 37, was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the noon wreck at West 5th Street and Bradford Place in LaPlace.

Silvestri was driving a 2012 Suzuki SX1300 motorcycle at a very high rate of speed west on West 5th Street, State Police said.

At the same time, Lisa Caronna, 41, of LaPlace was driving a 2017 Toyota Camry east on West 5th Street when Caronna began turning onto Bradford Place, crossing the path of Silvestri.

Louisiana State Police said Silvestri lost control of the motorcycle, laid it on the ground and was ejected into the Toyota. First responders took him to a local hospital.

“Several witnesses stated that Silvestri was operating the motorcycle in a reckless manner,” a preliminary investigation from Louisiana State Police said. “Excessive speed is a factor in the crash.”

Silvestri was wearing a DOT approved helmet.

Impairment is unknown and a toxicology test will be performed during an autopsy.

Caronna submitted to a breath test and no detectable alcohol was found in her system. She was not injured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
