VACHERIE — A St. John the Baptist Parish woman was killed today (Jan. 23) following a violent two-vehicle crash on the West Bank near the parish line between St. John and St. James.

According to preliminary investigation from Louisiana State Police, the collision occurred as 51-year-old Toneka Terry was traveling south shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Louisiana 3213 in a Chevrolet Trailblazer toward the intersection with Louisiana 3127.

For reasons still under investigation, State Police said Terry failed to yield and began making a left turn onto Louisiana 3127 in front of a westbound Caterpillar dump truck driven by 54-year-old Charles Dewitt of Westwego.

Terry was struck on the driver’s side of her vehicle and sustained fatal injuries as a result.

She was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. James Parish Coroner’s Office.

Terry’s 14-year-old front seat passenger received moderate injuries and was taken by Acadian Ambulance Service to University Medical Center in New Orleans.

Dewitt was not injured.

Police said impairment is unknown on the part of Terry and standard toxicology tests are pending through the St. James Parish Coroner’s Office.

Dewitt provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol present.

All three occupants involved in this crash were wearing their seat belts.
