DES ALLEMANDS — A River Region man was killed this week when his vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler during a morning collision, authorities said.

Louisiana State Police began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on U.S. 90 at Cypress Street in Des Allemands shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The crash took the life of 65-year-old James Maddin of Des Allemands.

The preliminary investigation revealed Maddin was traveling north on Cypress Street in a Ford Crown Victoria. As Maddin approached the intersection with U.S. 90 East, he failed to yield to an oncoming Freightliner 18-wheeler being driven by 47-year-old Jerry Bishop of Water Valley, Miss.

Maddin entered the path of the eastbound 18-wheeler and was struck on his driver’s side.

Maddin was taken to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, according to police.

Bishop was not injured in the crash.

Impairment is unknown as a factor on the part of Maddin, and State Police said a standard toxicology report is pending through the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

Bishop submitted to a breath test, which showed no alcohol present.

Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash.
