Shumaker: Earn a fully paid apprenticeship with Reserve college’s help

The New Year begins with classes starting Wednesday (Jan. 9) at the Reserve Campus.

We have so many exciting things to look forward to in the coming year. With the increased activity in internships and apprenticeship programs coming from industry, our students have more opportunities than ever before.

Imagine graduating from high school with a fully paid apprenticeship — apprenticeships that not only cover college expenses but also earn a paycheck as students complete the coursework.

One of the advantages to the Dual Enrollment program at the Reserve Campus is being ahead of those students who wait to complete high school before beginning their chosen program.

With emphasis on pre-requisite coursework, as well as regular semester classes, dual enrolled students have a distinct advantage to complete programs earlier than those who wait.

All three of the local River Parishes School Systems have taken the necessary steps to assist those students who wish to attend River Parishes Community College.

Now, the choices are even greater than before, with Louisiana Transfer Degrees available to qualifying students. Students thinking of going to LSU, Grambling, Southeastern or any number of Louisiana universities can now earn their Associate’s degree while attending high school and enter college as a junior in many cases.

There are many success stories right here at home from the Dual Enrollment program. While some programs have special requirements, all programs are open for study through Dual Enrollment.

Classes are held at the high school Satellite Center (St. Charles), CTE center (St. James) and the Reserve Campus.

Online classes are also available for some programs.

Make 2019 the year you consider Dual Enrollment at your very own, local Community College.

Get that step up and be ahead of the pack when it comes to your future. Speak to your Guidance Counselor about your particular school’s program.
