GARYVILLE — A Garyville man, previously linked to assault, burglary and firearm violence, was gunned down Sunday night in a hail of bullets that caused much of Garyville to take notice, police and community members said.

According to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, Lorenzo Eugene, 34, was shot and pronounced dead near his 158 S. Fig St. home just before 8 p.m.

Sheriff Mike Tregre said “someone was waiting for (Eugene) to come out of his home” before he was gunned down. Police said Eugene was “shot numerous times.”

The shooting was noticed by multiple members of the community, who reported anywhere from seven to 13 shots were fired.

Tregre said responding officers found a handgun in Eugene’s possession, adding authorities did not immediately know what might have caused the shooting.

During online discussion of the shooting on L’OBSERVATEUR’s Facebook page, posters said they heard the gunfire at a nearby gym and multiple streets over from Fig Street.

As of press time Tuesday morning, police have not announced if any arrests have been made or if the shooting involved more than one suspect.

However, the community has been cooperative in providing tips for the investigation, Tregre said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 985-359-8477.

The St. John Sheriff’s Office previously linked Eugene with a 2012 assault and burglary at a home in the LaPlace Oaks public housing development and an attempted murder and illegal firearm possession in Garyville in 2013.
