Glennon “Silky” Powell passed away on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, at the age of 71.
He was a native of the Irish Channel of New Orleans and a resident of LaPlace.
Silky was the beloved husband of Connie Fisher Powell and the devoted father of Margaret “Maggie” Powell, Allison “Allie” Powell and Erin Powell, aka “The Silk-sations.”
He was the son of the late Mildred Gagan Powell and Morris “Toots” Powell Sr. and brother of Morris “Mo” Powell Jr. (Olga) and Mildred Brechtel (the late, Weldon), son-in-law of Mary Claire Fisher and late Kenneth Fisher, brother-in-law of Donna Marman (John), and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Silky, a true New Orleanian, grew up in the Irish Channel, graduated from and then coached at Redemptorist High School and was the assistant equipment manager of the New Orleans Saints for 38 years.
He will always be remembered for his larger than life personality, infectious smile, playful sense of humor and generous, loving nature.
Oct. 20 would have been Silky’s 72nd birthday; so, the family invites friends and relatives to join us in celebrating Silky’s life at the Memorial Visitation at L. A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd., Kenner on Friday, Oct. 19 from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, 1900 Greenwood Drive in LaPlace from 9 until 11 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers and plants that you honor his memory by engaging in random acts of kindness and consider making a donation in Silky’s name to St. Charles Catholic High School, 100 Dominican Drive, LaPlace, LA 70068, the high school of his treasured daughters.
