Palamone: Workforce promotion nears launch for River Region

The Workforce Development Committee has been hard at work following the execution of the memorandum of understanding from May 7, 2017.

Since that time, we have completed high school surveys within all three parishes, developed a workforce pipeline graphic for allied Health that shows the different educational Pathways for the Industrial based certificate to Associate degree and then 4 year university and graduate level.

The levels of credential are “stackable,” meaning they build off one another, leading to additional career opportunities and increased salary. It is a powerful tool while discussing future opportunities with our younger generation, as well as our unemployed and underemployed.

We have also raised the initial level of funding to begin production of the Louisiana Calling “ground game” to start promoting available careers right here in the River Parishes, along with training opportunities.

The current schedule is to launch the program in November, just before the holidays.

The program will highlight our local residents working in local jobs and the success these individuals are having with their careers and their personal life.

We must give a great shout out to the contributors that are helping make this happen: Performance Contractors, Shell Oil, Cox, Reserve Telecommunications, St. John the Baptist Parish and St. Charles Parish.

We are continuing efforts to add to this list, therefore if any company, firm or individual has an interest in learning more about the program and possible contribution, please contact the Chamber office and I will personally contact you.

To add to our effort in promoting regional workforce development, another important event is coming up at the LCTCS- Reserve campus.

The 5th Annual Director’s Luncheon, benefiting the scholarship program, will be held at 11:30 am. Thursday.

The Reserve campus, which was formally under the direction of South Central Louisiana campus, has recently completed a full transfer to the River Parishes Community and Technical College, headquartered in Gonzales.

Your Chamber was an integral part of making the transfer occur.

The Directors luncheon mission/vision focus is:

• To provide Scholarship funds to often overlooked programs including Business, Allied Heath, AC & Refrigeration and Welding.

• To give an opportunity to students who are working hard to complete their programs and join our local workforce.

• To provide a “work ready” workforce for local Industry.

We encourage your business to consider participation and take part in helping grow our future workforce.
