Letter to the Editor: Garyville employee very happy with library leadership

As an employee of St. John the Baptist library, I was disturbed by some of the comments I read on Sept. 5 regarding my employer and felt that I should express some of my thoughts about that article.

First of all, not all employees are dissatisfied with the library’s leadership, and the credibility of some of the individuals interviewed is questionable.

Under the leadership of Trina Smith, the Garyville branch, which was often neglected by past directors in regards to maintenance, has finally within the past two years under her direction received needed roof repairs, increased security cameras, gutters installed and windows tinted to prevent further fading of books.

The branch is now about to receive the needed paint job that is long overdue. Ms. Smith does not play favorites and overlook this branch, as was in the past. Her efforts are very much appreciated.

Hopefully, Ms. Smiths’ efforts will eventually impact and influence the community more, given the time she needs.

Ms. Dana Douglas, my immediate supervisor, since coming aboard as assistant director, has been extremely helpful and supportive to the Garyville branch. No job is below her!

When I need coverage, she is always the first to volunteer to come and help out. Ms. Douglas does this for the other branches, as well, because when I’ve had emergencies in Garyville, I had to locate her either at the Edgard or Reserve branch.

On a number of occasions she has assisted the branch greatly with programs. Ms. Douglas has provided her time, ideas and expertise whenever needed. Her positive attitude is contagious.

In closing, let me state that I am one of many employees satisfied with the current administration. Hopefully, we can all move forward and keep needed funding to continue increasing services to our patrons.
