Keller: Don’t confuse ‘meek’ for ‘weak’

Thursday morning, I chose to read Matthew chapter 5, verse 5, in the Bible, which speaks about Jesus’ Sermon of the Mount. It reads: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

It refers to being meek as being compassionate and having a merciful spirit.

The dictionary describes “meek” as patient and mild, not inclined to anger or resentment.

Another definition is to be too submissive, easily imposed on, spineless and spiritless. That definition explains why many people confuse meekness with weakness.

Weakness is considered a lack of physical, mental or moral strength.

The bottom line is that meekness is not weakness, but strength.

I decided to look in a book, “Wings of Silver,” complied by Jo Petty, to see how meekness was described. This book says that meekness is surrendering to God.

When you do that and admit you have absolutely nothing to say, God speaks to you.

I’ve heard it said that God has two dwellings: One in Heaven and the other in a meek and thankful heart.

As I end this article, I’m conscious of the fact that I’ve been called a lot of things, but never accused of being meek. Thank God that He’s not finished with me yet.
