EDGARD — A Honda Accord driver traveling east on Louisiana 3127 in St. John the Baptist Parish suffered a flat tire and was operating without his headlights when he crossed the center line at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday, striking another vehicle head-on and losing his life in the process.
The victim, identified by Louisiana State Police as 30-year-old Vicente Olguin of Norco, was pronounced deceased on the scene by the St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner’s Office.
The two-vehicle fatality crash occurred near the intersection of Louisiana 3127 and Louisiana 640 on the West Bank of St. John Parish.
Preliminary investigation indicated Olguin crossed the centerline for unknown reasons and began traveling east in the westbound lane, all without the use of his headlights and with a flat tire on the right rear side of his vehicle.
Olguin’s Accord struck a Toyota Camry heading west in the westbound lane being driven by 19-year-old Kaitlyn Lassere of Thibodaux.
Lassere attempted to avoid Olguin by swerving to the right, but the vehicles collided head-on, police said. Olguin was properly restrained during the crash but suffered fatal injuries.
Lassere, who was properly restrained, suffered serious injuries and was flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans by Acadian Ambulance Airmed Service.
She was not suspected to be impaired at the time of the crash, and State Police did not have an update on her condition as of early this week.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor on the part of Olguin, with authorities saying the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office is running standard toxicology tests.
A timeline for those results is not known.
