LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic summer camps place student athletes in leadership positions as they share their passions with younger children who comprise the future of local athletic programs.

Head coach Wayne Stein oversees the baseball camp with the help of his players. His favorite part of the experience is watching the boys give participants individual attention while instilling a love for baseball.

“It’s something that they enjoy, to give their time and knowledge to these younger kids,” Stein said. “I’ve had multiple parents email me and refer back to how excited their child was about the counselors.”

The St. Charles Catholic baseball camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon May 29-May 31.

Open to boys age 7-14, the three-day camp includes instruction in fielding, hitting, pitching and base running.

The $75 registration fee is due at 8:30 a.m. May 29 and includes a Comet baseball T-shirt.

For more information, contact Stein at 985-703-0672.

Over the years, Stein has seen several former campers develop into players and join the Comets baseball team.

Starsteppers dance team coach Christine Creppel has a similar observation, adding the three new team members who aced tryouts this year are former mini-camp participants.

“My Starstepper dance team members look forward to this all year because they get to share their love and passion for dance with these little girls who look up to them and watch them on the football field.”

The Starsteppers mini-dance camp is open to girls ages 4-13 from 9 a.m. to noon June 18-21.

For a $50 registration fee, dancers receive instruction in technique, jazz dance, kick dance, prop dance and more, as well as a camp T-shirt and refreshments. Stretches learned during the camp are applicable to other summer sports, including softball and swimming, according to Creppel.

She said family members always enjoy watching the girls’ high-energy dance performance on the last day of camp.

St. Charles Catholic hosts a variety of other summer activities, including football, basketball, cheerleading, soccer and creativity camps.

Summer camps build character and expose children to new activities and experiences, according to Dr. Courtney P. Millet, director of instruction, advancement and institutional achievement.

SCC’s football camp is open to boys ages 7-12 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 16-20. During the camp, head coach Frank Monica and his staff teach football fundamentals, weight training and conduct speed drills.

Registration, $100 per participant, takes place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. July 16 and includes a camp T-shirt. A Hammer Award is presented to a player each day, and daily games end with a Super Bowl Champion.

Registration is $100 per person, and forms can be picked up from Susie Bourgeois at St. Charles Catholic. Sign-up is available at noon on the first day of camp.

Registration will be capped at 60 to ensure each camper receives proper attention. Direct any questions to Todd at 225-954-1201 or email todd.kemper@stcharlescatholic.org.
