RESERVE — Gun reform and school safety discussions are still proliferating schools one month following the deadly Florida shooting that claimed 17 lives, and East St. John students are eager to have their voices heard.

In light of National Walkout Day, observed today, ESJH students are looking to conduct a school assembly or walkout to give individuals an opportunity to speak out on issues impacting school security.

St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools Superintendent Kevin George said an assembly would follow an organized agenda and be conducted in a positive manner.

The program is primarily student-driven, according to George, and he’s proud of those who are exercising their Constitutional rights to take a stand for what they believe in.

“I believe it’s every student’s right to have their voice heard,” George said.

“We want to build good citizens and have students feel encouraged. I applaud the kids at East St. John High for spearheading this event and taking a stand to show the state and federal government that these are the issues that affect them everyday.”

Normal safety protocol will accompany the assembly, according to George. As with all large-scale campus events, the St. John Sheriff’s Office will be on call as a precaution.

George said no other St. John Parish public schools have coordinated National Walkout events.

St. Charles Catholic High School is holding a dedicated prayer service this morning to show solidarity against violence, according to Dr. Courtney P. Millet, director of admissions, instruction and institutional achievement.

“It’s a very tough situation for our faculty, teachers and students,” Millet said. “Here at SCC, we will come together as a school to pray with intention for protection against violence.”

Riverside Academy Marketing and Enrollment Director Leslie Reed said there are no plans for Walkout Day activities today.

According to Reed, faculty reached out to the student council and class president with a reminder to inform the front office of any plans for walkouts, assemblies or demonstrations.
