LAPLACE — A 29-year-old female was shot in the foot, the result of reckless LaPlace gunfire, police said.
The victim was treated and released from the hospital after the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office said she suffered a “very minor injury.”
Shawn Michael McKinney, 44, of Reserve, turned himself into investigators a short time after the violence erupted and is charged with felony aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon. He posted a $12,500 bond and was released Sunday.
Deputies began their investigation after responding to Cardinal and Redbud streets following a gunfire report at 12:40 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, officers learned a 29-year-old victim was arguing with a man in a West 2nd Street parking lot.
“During the argument, McKinney pulled out a gun and began shooting at the victim and a vehicle in the parking lot,” a Sheriff’s Office release said. “He shot the victim in the foot then fled the scene in a vehicle.”
The victim was taken by a personal vehicle to the hospital.
Police said an “unknown make” .40 caliber weapon was used in the shooting, adding the suspect and victim did not have a previous relationship.
The nature of the argument that led to the shooting is also unknown.
Police said there were others in the vehicle when the shooting began but no other injuries were reported.
