VACHERIE — One man’s cinder block throw into a local convenience store connected for a jail stay.
Jewann Baptiste, 23, of Houma, pleaded guilty Tuesday to simple burglary after he was linked to a St. James Parish burglary last May.
St. James deputies said video surveillance footage from Wag-A-Pak in Vacherie showed two male subjects walk up to the store with a cinder block and throw it through one of the doors to make entry.
The suspects were able to get away with cash and several packs of cigarettes.
Detectives identified Baptiste as one of the suspects and learned he was living out of a Thibodaux hotel.
A search of Baptiste’s hotel room and vehicle led to the discovery of items consistent with the burglary, authorities said.
Baptiste was subsequently booked into the St. James Parish Jail.
On Tuesday, Baptiste was sentenced to five years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.
Assistant District Attorney Adam Koenig prosecuted Louque in Judge Thomas Kliebert’s courtroom.
According to authorities, the second suspect noted in video surveillance from Wag-A-Pak has not been identified.
