NEW ORLEANS — An upcoming concert at the Marigny Opera House in New Orleans will benefit the St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools Orchestral Strings Program.

Indigo Strings will take place at 5 p.m. March 4.

A suggested donation of $20 may be paid at the door.

Indigo Strings is a unique ensemble comprised of piano, violin and cello, topped off with a vibrant soprano presenting a confluence of classical training, the influence of tin pan alley and the heat of New Orleans to bring out the best of the American Classics.

The school district’s own music and master teacher Rebecca Holmes, a cellist, will be joined by Marta Vincent on piano, Anne Hibbs on violin and Arynne Fannin on vocals as performers.

Holmes has spearheaded the formation of the St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools Orchestral Strings Program, the only one of its kind in the River Parishes.

The program kicked off this year with a donation from the VH1 Save the Music Foundation of specially-sized instruments that allow third- and fourth-grade students to learn violin, viola or cello as part of their regular school day.

Proceeds raised from the concert will go toward repair and maintenance of these instruments.

They will also be used to purchase instruments to be used next year at East St. John Preparatory Academy as Fifth Ward Elementary School students, where the program was piloted, advance to fifth grade at ESJP as well as to allow the program to expand to include more students.
