Flash Flood watch issued for Sunday night into Monday; street flooding possible

LAPLACE – The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Southeast Louisiana, including St. John the Baptist Parish, from 6 p.m. Sunday through Monday morning.

A strong system tracking through the region will bring rounds of heavy rainfall after 10 p.m. Sunday into Monday morning. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches over the 24- to 30-hour period are forecast.

The main threat is that the cold ground cannot absorb rainfall nearly as quickly as it can during warmer times of the year so street flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas could be more likely to occur.

Parish crews are out making preparations throughout the parish and will remain on call through the night.

Assist with heavy rainfall by clearing drains and catch basins near homes. Residents are asked to stay tuned to local weather stations for changes in the weather forecast.

To report high water or any emergencies, dial 911 so calls may be directed to the appropriate department and a record established.
