Poche’: Dr. King specials highlight January library events

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, the Reserve Library will host “MLK Make and Take Event” for the entire week leading up to his birthday.
Children of all ages will make “I Have a Dream Mobiles” from clothes hangers and card stock. For more information, call Tamara Chauvin at 985-536-4107. The Garyville Branch is inviting children 6 and up to paint an image relating to Dr. King’s special day. The program starts at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 11. Pre-registration is required. For more information, call branch supervisor Elmira Duhe at 985-535-6868. The Reserve Branch will be showing “Selma” at 2 p.m. Jan. 13th. In this historical drama set during the height of the American civil rights movement, individuals marched from Selma, Ala., to the state capital of Montgomery to secure voting rights for African Americans. The Central Library will be bringing back their “Crochet Classes” for the New Year. The classes take place at 5 p.m. Jan. 10 and 24.
Computer classes will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. every Wednesday for adults to instruct on the basic operation of certain computer components and successful usage of programs. Classes will last approximately an hour and be limited to 10 attendees per session. Pre-registration is encouraged. Please call 985-652-6857 for more information.
Tweens and teens are invited to learn how to turn any regular pair of gloves into cell phone gloves at 6 p.m. Jan. 9.
Story time will be held for children, 1 and up at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday. This weekly program is a time for young children and their parents or caretakers to interact in a comfortable setting. Each session includes stories, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities.
The Reserve Library will host their monthly Make Shoppe at 6 p.m. Jan. 8, creating “DIY Monogram Chargers” using Mardi Gras beads. Stop by to sign up or call 985-536-4107. “Walk into the New Year” will be held every Thursday at 10 a.m. for adults. Patrons will walk/exercise for 30 minutes to improve or maintain their overall health.
The Garyville Branch will host a “Dining with Diabetes” presentation at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 22 for adult patrons and at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 29 for tweens and teens. Cynthia Clifton of the LSU Ag Center will give informative sheets to everyone in attendance. Tech classes will be held at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 4 for adult patrons and on Jan. 8 for tweens and teens. Patrons can learn the basics, such as setting up an email account or learning simple Microsoft Office programs. Children’s programs include Pajama Evening Storytime at 5 p.m. every Thursday in January.
The Edgard Library is bringing back computer classes for adults and story time for children, ages 5 and up. Computer classes will be held at 10 a.m. every Monday and at 6 p.m. every Wednesday. For more information, call branch supervisor Carlos Diaz at 985-497-3453.
Story time takes place at 5 p.m. every Wednesday. Parents and caregivers, please bring your children out to enjoy great stores and crafts. Tweens and teens are invited to “Game Time” at 3:30 p.m. every Thursday, designed for kids to put down their smart phones and electronics and play some classic board games, such as Jenga, Checkers, Candyland, etc.
