LAPLACE — Mentors with the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office met with participants in the department’s new Distinguished Gentlemen’s Club during a gathering this month at Patrol Headquarters in LaPlace.

Mentors and participants came together in a relaxed atmosphere to discuss hobbies, school and plans after high school graduation.

Preparing for a job interview, studying for the ACT, researching career choices and the latest popular video games and movies were among the topics.

Officers who serve as mentors and participants from local high schools have been communicating since May when the DG group was formed by Sheriff Mike Tregre.

Lt. Vernon Bailey, DG director, said he and other mentors have been working to guide these young men in building traits of good character that will prepare them to be productive members of society as well as assist these young men in obtaining skills needed to become positive influences in the community.

Tregre also welcomes community leaders to serve as volunteers and work with his officers in presenting this program.
