Gauff: Seniors with tax freeze question asked to come by office

Published 12:05 am Saturday, November 18, 2017

The Assessor does not raise or lower taxes nor does (s)he make the laws which affect property. The amount of taxes you pay is determined by the millage rate, which is applied to your property’s assessed value.

Seniors 65 years and older should come into the Assessor’s office to get taxes “frozen.”

A “freeze” stands for freezing the assessed value of your home, not the millage rate.

The 7-mil increase voted upon by the parish reflects the increase in the tax bill.
