SCC battles with injury, focuses on basics

LAPLACE — Another week, another injury.

St. Charles Catholic (6-1, 2-0) junior running back Joseph Chiarella injured his ankle during an ugly tackle Friday and will probably not see action this week, coach Frank Monica said.

Chiarella’s injury came right as the Comets welcomed back senior Narquez Jones, who finished last week with 10 carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Narquez Jones, No. 8, is congratulated after scoring the game’s first touchdown last week.

Jones provides SCC with powerful inside running that compliments shifty backs Chiarella and Phillip Tran.

“Not only did he give us a physical presence, the fact that he came back really excited the team,” Monica said. “This guy is laying it on the line for his team even though he was injured and is going to have postseason surgery. It says an awful lot about him.”

Sophomore quarterback Justin Dumas is coming off a game where he took the majority of the snaps from center, allowing a dinged up Sutton Bourgeois to play a limited role.

Monica complimented Dumas’ running of the team and, most importantly, making sure his teammates were lined up correctly and executing the called plays.

SCC is traveling this week to face winless Haynes Academy, which has suffered in 2017 from low player turnout.

Monica said he is using this week to get back to basics, focus on fundamentals and eliminate a penalty concern that marred last week’s victory over Donaldsonville.

On the injury front, Monica said starting quarterback Lloyd Nash is expected to see a doctor this week to update his recovery following an injury that sidelined him in Week 1. The Comets remain hopeful Nash can return for the playoffs.
