LAPLACE — Three local people have been arrested and more could be as detectives investigate a fatal shooting Sunday night in LaPlace.

The victim, 22-year-old Shane Chopin, was located behind a garbage dumpster on the ground with several gunshot wounds to his body in the 800 block of West Airline Highway.

Emergency medical services attempted to provide aid, but the subject died at the scene, according to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities arrested three suspects, each from St. John Parish, within 36 hours.

Sheriff Mike Tregre said more arrests are pending in the investigation, which has proceeded through some misinformation provided by community members.

“Apparently, some people want to lie and provide an alibi for these individuals,” Tregre said. “They will go to jail. They are trying to give us alibis and say they were not there at the time of the homicide.”

Those arrested include Clarensio Lintrell Bolden, 26, of Garyville; Deschad Matthews, 21, of LaPlace; and Ronte Murray, 19, of LaPlace.

Bolden was arrested for second degree murder on Tuesday. Police said he has been arrested more than 10 times in St. John Parish since 2008. Bolden posted a $125,000 bond and has been released, authorities said.

Based on investigation, detectives obtained a judicial warrant for Murray’s arrest, and he was booked Tuesday for principal to second degree murder.

Murray is being held in lieu of an $80,000 bond. In July 2016, police said Murray was arrested for attempted second degree murder for his involvement in a shooting at a graduation party in LaPlace.

Matthews was arrested Monday and charged with principal to second degree murder. He is being held in lieu of an $80,000 bond.

Tregre said detectives developed Bolden, Matthews and Murray as suspects during the investigation, adding a motive for the shooting is undetermined.

Police stress the investigation is ongoing and ask anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s Office TIPS line at 985-359-TIPS or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.

Crimestoppers callers do not have to testify and may qualify for a cash reward.

Nola.com reported Chopin is the father of a newborn baby girl, according to cousin Jada Holmes. She said Chopin wanted to “raise his family and do right for his daughter,” Holmes told the website.
