LAPLACE — Three people have been arrested in relation to a fatal shooting Sunday night in LaPlace.

Deschad Matthews, 21, of LaPlace was charged Monday with principal to second degree murder.

Police records indicate Matthews’ bond has been set at $80,000.

According to St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre, two more suspects were arrested by 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Jail records Tuesday show 19-year-old Ronte Murray of LaPlace arrested for principal to 2nd degree murder and Clarensio Bolden, 26, of Garyville arrested for second degree murder. Police have not publicly spoke about a connection between Murray or Bolden and Sunday night’s killing.

Tregre said more arrests are anticipated as police continue their investigation, which has proceeded through some misinformation provided by community members.

“Apparently, some people want to lie and provide an alibi for these individuals,” Tregre said. “They will go to jail. They are trying to give us alibies and say they were not there at the time of the homicide.”

Police have been investigating since late Sunday the death of a 22-year-old man, who was shot and left for dead behind a LaPlace dumpster.

The victim, identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Shane Chopin, was found at approximately 11:35 p.m. Sunday in the 800 block of West Airline Highway in LaPlace.

Deputies responded to the scene after receiving a shooting report.

Chopin was found behind a garbage dumpster on the ground with several gunshot wounds to his body. Emergency medical services attempted to provide aid, but the victim passed away at the scene, police said

Tregre said authorities are still trying to determine a motive for the killing.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to call the St. John Sheriff’s Office TIPS line at 985-359-TIPS or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.

Those with information that call Crimestoppers do not have to testify and may qualify for a cash reward. Tips can be submitted at stjohnsheriff.org/submitatip.php.

Nola.com reported Chopin is the father of a newborn baby girl, according to cousin Jada Holmes. She said Chopin wanted to “raise his family and do right for his daughter,” Holmes told the website.
