RESERVE — A LaPlace man crashed into a telephone pole following a high-speed police chase that included the suspect throwing packages of illegal drugs and a gun out his window along Airline Highway, authorities said.

Dwayne Anthony Brown, 31, of LaPlace, was officially charged Tuesday for a bundle of felony and misdemeanor drug and traffic charges.

As of Friday morning, he was being held in custody in lieu of a $108,000 bond. Police said Brown has been arrested more than 10 times in St. John the Baptist Parish since 2003.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling northbound on Homewood Drive in Reserve at approximately 6:45 p.m. Monday.

The driver, later identified as Brown, refused to stop, police said.

“At one point, deputies observed Brown toss a gun and small packages, which was later determined to contain marijuana and methamphetamine, from the vehicle,” a Sheriff’s Office release said.

“Brown continued traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on Airline Highway to Central Avenue, where he crashed into a telephone pole at Central and Railroad avenues.”

According to booking records, Brown faces 16 charges, including six for drugs and one for felony unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling.
