The St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District celebrated the role of parents on May 17 during the school district’s first Parent Appreciation Day.

Superintendent Kevin George said the District decided to move up the day, typically celebrated in July, so students and staff members could celebrate parents during the school year.

Each school planned special events to celebrate the important roles parents play in the lives of their children and the success of their schools.

“This time every year we do things for students, but this year we wanted to do something a little different to show our appreciation for what our parents do this year and every year,” Fifth Ward Elementary Principal Drenean Brown said.

Events included breakfasts, guest speakers, student performances, tributes, picnic lunches and gifts.
