DESTREHAN — Courtesy of community nonprofit Doves of Peace, Destrehan High School graduating seniors Tynese Janey Harris and Elizabeth Levy-Folgar each recently received $1,000 grants to assist with their higher education expenses.

Doves of Peace, via a grant from Entergy Corporation, awards the stipends yearly to graduating seniors in the River Parishes who plan to attend a four-year college or university immediately after graduation.

2018 applications will be available in River Parishes high schools counselors’ office between December and February.

Doves of Peace is the non-profit foundation, incorporated in 2008, of Upsilon Mu Zeta Chapter, the River Parishes chapter of international sorority Zeta Phi Beta.

Organizers said Upsilon Mu Zeta espouses high academic ideals for St. John the Baptist, St. Charles and St. James parishes. The Upsilon Mu Zeta Chapter meets the second Wednesday of each month at a local library.

For the second consecutive year, Doves of Peace was selected in January as a River Region Arts & Humanities Council Grant recipient, which sponsored “Vanora” the Storyteller.

The program included storytelling in March at Fifth Ward Elementary School as part of the Adopt-A-School, while also performing at the St. John Parish Council On Aging and Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home in Reserve.
