LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic’s hopes of getting to play for a state championship were dashed Friday when No. 11 seed Country Day eliminated the No. 2 seed Lady Comets from the Division IV bracket with a 2-0 win.
The Cajuns (10-10-6) will play against No. 4 Newman for the Division IV title at 12:30 p.m. today at Tad Gormley Stadium.
St. Charles finished the season 17-3-1 after reaching the semifinals for the first time in school history. It was an unforgettable season, fourth year coach Travis Trepagnier said.
“To pull off everything we did this year, winning the district championship, earning a first-round bye, winning the first playoff game, getting to the semifinals, it’s just incredible,” Trepagnier said. “We’ve come a long way.”
Friday just wasn’t the Lady Comets’ day, Trepagnier said. The team, which already had battled injuries and illnesses, had two players injured during Friday’s match.
“We had our two players leave in ambulances,” he said. “They both were fine. Both went home from the hospital that day.”
Country Day, which returns to the finals for the first time since winning a title in 2000, was more aggressive, Trepagnier said.
Lucy Butterbaugh scored the first goal for the Cajuns in the third minute. Mandy Friedlander added a goal in the final minutes.
“They had a little more fight in them than we did,” Trepagnier said. “Every ball that could have gone 50/50, went to them. They just wanted it more than us that day.”
