As St. Charles Catholic High School undergoes a major renovation project, the baseball field also got a makeover with the addition of a new turf infield this month.

The $200,000 project, funded through private donations, is a welcome addition, said head coach Wayne Stein.

“It’s going to be a life-changer for me,” he said. “It’s a 365-day job taking care of the field. Once you add up the paint, dirt, grass, seed and gas for the mower, it’s going to save us money in the long run.”

St. Charles becomes one of only a handful of area high schools with turf fields, including Jesuit, Chalmette and St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Comets will open the 2017 season Feb. 23 against Mandeville as part of the SCC Tournament.
