RESERVE — Authorities with St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office and St. John Parish Public Schools are working on additional safety measures at all parish schools after a student was arrested last week with a gun on campus.

Deilreh Toney, 17, of LaPlace was released from custody Saturday after posting a $5,000 bond. The East St. John High School student was arrested Friday, charged with carrying a firearm, dangerous weapon at school.

“We do not want to implement heavy handed tactics, but we take school safety as a top priority,” Sheriff Mike Tregre said.

St. John officers and school administrators will work together to conduct random checks with K-9 units to improve student and staff safety.

Deputies arrested the suspect at 1:27 p.m. Friday for carrying a firearm at the school.

During the investigation, Tregre said the student told detectives he took the unloaded gun from home. His motive is unknown. After the school resource officer received a tip that a student had a gun, the officer and school administrators recovered the firearm in the student’s book bag.

Deputies arrested the teenager without incident.

The School District announced Tuesday it is working with the Sheriff’s Office to increase security on all campuses, particularly at East St. John High School and LaPlace Elementary School, the district’s two largest schools.

Those measures include a weapon-sniffing dog that will be on campus each morning, additional deputies on campus to help monitor students and more frequent searches of buses and students.

Superintendent Kevin George encouraged students to continue to be vigilant about what is happening at their schools.

“I want to encourage students to come forward with any information they may have,” George said. “We will continue to be proactive with our safety measures but we need your help. Let us know if you have information about something happening at your school.”
