Keller: Covenant House visit reinforces spiritual connections

This past weekend, I visited the Covenant House in Kinard, Fla., which is a Christian home that accepts men with life threatening problems, many with drugs and alcohol addiction.
It’s a 12-month program run by Mr. Wilbur Butts and his wife, Mary Linda, assisted by Mr. Walt Fields and his wife, Desda.
This was my second visit this year as I was interested in seeing three young men whom I had directed to the facility. I’m glad to report that they are all doing well.
It was great to visit and share with men who are seeking answers on how to become the men for which they were created. I was excited to be with some of God’s favorite people and am hoping one day they will realize how special they are.
Mr. Wilbur and his wife, Mary Linda, invited Chris (a friend of mine who offered to drive me to Florida) and me to attend a high school football game Friday night in Port St. Joe, Fla.
It was the Homecoming game in which their twin grandsons, Josh and Caleb, were playing. Earlier that afternoon, we attended a Homecoming parade with a marching band exhibiting a patriotic spirit and the Homecoming court riding in convertibles, proudly waving to the crowd.
The patriotic spirit in Port St. Joe, Fla., is what many people in America are missing.
Also, what made the parade so exciting is that the Butts’ granddaughter, Mary, was in the Homecoming court.
That night, the Port St. Joe Sharks won the game and at halftime the Homecoming queen was announced.
I was sitting next to Mr. Wilbur and his wife when their granddaughter was crowned the 2016 Homecoming queen.
It was exciting for me to be with them, seeing both with their eyes on their grandsons when they played and the emotion when their granddaughter was crowned Homecoming queen.
During the game, I introduced myself to a gentleman seated behind me. He was a 30-year Marine veteran who, after retirement, taught at the high school for 13 years. I thanked him for his service to our country and his community.
What a blessing to have met him and his family!
I’ve had relationships with many people. Casual relationships are a dime a dozen. However, spiritual connections are special and are a gift from God to encourage each other to be ambassadors for Christ. Mr. Wilbur Butts is one of the few spiritual connections that I have.
