LAPLACE — Additional heavy rainfall of three to five inches could occur throughout St. John the Baptist Parish the remainder to day and Saturday as a slow moving low pressure system moves through the Gulf Coast.
St. John the Baptist Parish remains under a Flood Advisory until noon and a Flash Flood Watch until Saturday at 7 a.m.
Locally, sandbags are available at the locations listed below. At this time, residents are limited to 10 bags per person. Bags are on site, but please remember to bring a shovel and do not take additional empty bags.
- 425 Captain G. Bourgeois Street in Laplace
- Wallace Fire Station – 5733 Hwy 18, Wallace
- Pleasure Bend Fire Station – 1200 Hwy 543, Vacherie
Approximately 3.5 inches of rainfall was recorded in LaPlace and 4 inches in Reserve in the past 24 hours with possible higher amounts elsewhere in the Parish. Street flooding was also reported in low-lying areas Thursday. All roads are passable at this time and wastewater and drainage systems are improving during breaks in the rainfall.
Due to highly saturated grounds, additional street flooding is possible where multiple thunderstorms occur in a short period of time. Motorists should remain vigilant on roadways during severe weather and never attempt to drive down flooded streets.
Residents should call 9-1-1 to report drainage, sewage or flooding problems IMMEDIATELY.
Residents are also being asked to minimize the amount of discharge placed into the wastewater system in an effort to prevent overflows and allow the systems to catch up. Activities such as washing clothes, running dishwashers, flushing toilets and all other activities that discharge a large amount into the collection system should be limited until further notice.
Taking showers and baths are not included in the conservation measures.
