Sugarcane farmers recognize region’s best

Nearly 200 sugarcane farmers and community members recently gathered for the 55th Annual St. James Sugarcane Appreciation Dinner, held each year to recognize and thank researchers, extension personnel and agriculture professionals for the work that they do in the sugarcane industry.

Speakers for the evening program were Ann Coulon, vice president of administration for the LSU AgCenter, and Edwis Dufrene, agronomist for the USDA-ARS Sugarcane Research Unit.

High yield certificates were presented to the top ten farmers.

Jack Pettus received the Kermit Coulon Outstanding Service Award, and Neal Poche III received the Kermit Coulon Scholarship.

Pettus has worked with the American Sugarcane League since 2001 as the Washington consultant for all domestic and international sugar trade issues. Since 2006 he has served the organization as vice president of government relations.

Poche is a graduate of Lutcher High School and will be attending LSU this fall.
