Keller: Area sheriff leads way for nation’s law enforcement

On Wednesday/June 29, Sheriff Greg Champagne of St. Charles Parish was installed as President of the National Sheriffs’ Association.

With 3,008 sheriffs in the United States, what an honor for Sheriff Champagne to be elected to serve in this prestigious position!

He will be the voice of all the sheriffs in America and their voice in Congress on issues affecting law enforcement.

I spoke to St. James Sheriff Willy Martin, who along with 20 other sheriffs from Louisiana, including our own Sheriff Mike Tregre, made the trip to Minneapolis, Minn.

Sheriff Martin said it was an exciting occasion, not only for Greg and his family, but for all who made the trip. The one thing about getting people from Louisiana involved in something is that you can always expect a party.

Sheriff Martin shared that together with other sheriffs from Louisiana, they held a “Louisiana Night” to honor Sheriff Champagne.

It featured Louisiana cuisine and entertainment by Wayne Toups and Zydecajun. Needless to say, with that agenda, the party and the program were successful.

Over the last 25 years, I’ve gotten to know and respect Greg. I consider him a friend and enjoy the couple of times a year that we get to visit at his office.

Earlier in the year when he told me about being elected, I shared that it’s been said that to whom much is given, much is expected.

In Proverbs 29:2, it says — “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.”

The sheriffs in America are in good hands with Sheriff Champagne as their leader.

The people throughout the River Parishes should be proud, especially the St. Charles Parish residents, who have continually re-elected Greg.

Last election, he was unopposed.

That was no surprise, because his job approval rating is always 80 percent. Yes, I’m happy about Greg’s honor, but more excited about what God is doing in his life.
